Description
Wheal Anna House is a former counting house for the Wheal Anna mine, now a private residence, built around the 1840s or 1850s for a mine captain. The building is constructed of killas rubble and features a grouted scantle slate hipped roof with brick chimneys on the side walls. It has a double-depth plan with two rooms at the front flanking a central entrance hall that leads to a stair hall between rear service rooms. The two front rooms on the first floor are separated by a folding partition, which is now fixed, allowing for the possibility of creating a meeting room for mine management.
The exterior is two storeys high with unaltered elevations. The symmetrical three-window south front retains its original door and windows, which are set in openings spanned by shallow segmental brick arches. The central doorway features a four-panel door with an overlight, and the windows are 12-pane hornless sashes. A similar window is located at the rear, including a tall stair window.
Inside, the house is virtually unaltered and retains most of its original features, including a dog-leg stair, panelled doors, and chimney-pieces with iron grates. There is also a wooden screen between the front chambers.
