Description

LUDGVAN CASTLE ROAD SW 43 SE 7/30 Treassowe Manor Farmhouse and - adjoining barn GV II

Farmhouse, C17 and C19, with circa early C19 barn adjoining. Granite rubble walls. Slurried scantle slate roofs with stone gable end stacks. Hipped roof over barn. Plan: overall irregular L-shaped plan. Originally a T-shaped 3-room plan with hall and parlour to the front and a buttery with small windows in small wing at right angles to the rear middle. Circa early C19 a 2-room plan house was built at right angles in front of the left hand room, and then a taller barn was built in front of this on higher ground. Exterior: 2 storeys. Original south-west front partly obscured by C19 house in front of left hand side; doorway near the angle, now with window; window over, and doorway right with window over. The doorway is cut through a former C17 chamfered window opening. Circa late C19 or C20 4-pane horned sashes, left, and C20 windows right. Rear of this part had a 12-pane horizontal sliding sash at first floor right of the large gable-ended pantry. The C19 house has a nearly symmetrical 2 window front with central doorway. Over the doorway is a reused C17 chamfered lintel. The barn, left, has 1 ground floor window opening towards the left, incorporating C17 or earlier masonry, and 3 first floor window openings. Larger window left, originally a winnowing doorway and the very small right-hand window, a ventilator. The barn doorway is in the left hand end with window over. There is another doorway at rear right with a reused C17 chamfered lintel over and loading and winnowing doorway opposite the front winnowing opening. Interiors not inspected.
