Description

The United Reformed Church, built in 1867, is a Bible Christian Chapel designed in a Classical style. It is constructed from killas rubble with granite dressings, featuring quoins, sills, jambs, round arches, and a moulded frame of a semi-open pediment at the front. The building also has embattled parapets on the front walls of the ancillary rooms at the rear and a dry slate roof.

The church has a rectangular aisle-less plan with a gallery on three sides and staircases at the front (ritual west) end on either side of a pair of entrances. Vestries flank the rostrum and organ loft at the rear, and there is a schoolroom with flanking porches at the far rear. The exterior consists of two storeys with a symmetrical 1:3:1-bay pedimented front. The central bays project forward and feature an oculus above a shaped string that forms a hoodmould over the name and date panel. Below this, there are three linked lights with hoodmoulds and keyblocks, as well as panelled aprons on pilasters with moulded imposts. The pair of doorways beneath the entablature has similar heads to the windows, springing from a continuous moulded impost string. Each flanking bay contains tall narrow stair sashes with margin panes, and all front windows and those at the front of the porches have spoked fanlight heads. All windows are horned sashes with glazing bars, including the three-window range on each side elevation.

Inside, the church features a panelled gallery front supported on shaped brackets, with the gallery resting on slender near Doric columns. The rostrum has an arcaded front and a turned balustrade, along with a carved central plaster ceiling rose and original box pews in the gallery.

The chapel was built to seat 500 persons and is designated at Grade II for being a fine mid-19th century urban chapel in a classical style, with a partially intact interior that includes a balustraded rostrum and a panelled gallery with box pews.
