Description
The Presbytery to the Roman Catholic Church of St Mary Immaculate is a 19th-century building constructed from squared Killas rubble stone with granite dressings, topped by a dry Delabole slate tile roof featuring alternate crested clay ridge tiles. It has an L-shaped plan with rooms arranged around a central staircase and is connected to the church by a single-storey link on the south side. There is also a single-storey extension at the rear.
This two and a half storey building includes a cellar. The main elevation faces east and features pairs of eight-light sash windows on the ground and first floors, with blind trefoils above them, all set within pointed arch granite surrounds. A single window in the gable has a blind trefoil above and is framed by a round-headed granite surround. The south elevation includes a set-back lean-to entrance with a diagonal buttress and a Gothic doorway. Behind this entrance is a one and a half storey projection that connects to the single-storey link. The rear elevation has a pair of sash windows on both the ground and first floors, along with a gabled dormer window in the attic. The right side of the rear elevation is blank, featuring a single-storey extension on the ground floor. The chimney stack is located on the south gable of the rear range, while the two stacks on the north elevation have been removed.
Inside, notable features include six-panelled doors, cornicing in the two main reception rooms (both of which still have their window shutters), and one room that contains fitted cupboards with decorative heads featuring cross and trefoil designs. There are also some fireplace surrounds and the staircase.
