Description
The Former Drill Hall in Falmouth, built in 1874, now serves as an indoor market. It was designed to accommodate 1,000 people and features a structure made of killas rubble with granite dressings, topped by a dry Delabole slate roof that has a gable end facing the street and three linked hipped roofs over the wings on the right. The front gable is coped. The building is in a Gothic style with some classical elements, presenting a symmetrical three-bay front. This includes a large traceried rose window above a pair of round-arched doorways with carved capitals and imposts on clustered shafts. Above these is a name panel, while the flanking bays feature two-light transomed round-arched windows under hood-moulds, all framed by pilasters with carved and moulded imposts leading to segmental arches. The slender mullions have carved capitals, and behind them are hornless sash windows with glazing bars and fanlight heads. The rear of the building has a central rose window with latticed glazing. Inside, there are wide-span tie-rod roof trusses and a gallery at the front end.
