Description
Plane Cottage is an incline plane keeper's cottage that has been converted into a private house. It dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of rendered stone rubble with a rag slate roof featuring hipped ends. The building has a double depth plan with a central entrance and two small service rooms at the rear.
The exterior is two storeys high and has an almost symmetrical three-window front. There is a 20th-century glazed door in the center, with the original 19th-century porch removed. To the left, there is a 19th-century two-light casement window, and to the right, a 20th-century two-light casement. On the first floor, there are two 19th-century two-light casements flanking a centrally placed 19th-century one-light casement.
Inside, the cottage features 19th and 20th-century carpentry and joinery. Plane Cottage was associated with the incline plane to the east, which was part of the Bude Canal that opened in 1823.
