Description

Lock Cottage is a lock keeper's cottage, dating to around 1800, and subsequently altered in the 20th century. It is constructed of slatestone rubble. The roof is hipped and covered in asbestos slate, with two axial chimney stacks and a further stack at the left end, all with rubble shafts. The cottage has a three-room plan; the room to the right is heated by an axial stack, the central room by a stack to the left, and the left-end room by a stack at the left end. A small, single-storey stable is attached to the left end, and is now incorporated into the main house. A single-storey lean-to is located at the right end. The front elevation is asymmetrical, with three windows and all 20th-century casements. The entrance is through a 20th-century plank door, located in the room to the right. The stable to the left has two 20th-century windows and doors. The left end of the cottage has two 20th-century windows on the first floor, and the right end has a small, single-storey lean-to and a 20th-century window on the first floor. The rear elevation has 20th-century windows on both the ground and first floors towards both the left and right sides. The interior was not inspected. The cottage's group value is derived from its association with the canal system.
