Description

Wilkey Down is a farmhouse built around the early 19th century, with extensions added in the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed from stone rubble and features a slate roof with hipped ends at the front of the earlier section and gable ends at the front and rear of the later section on the left. The building has brick axial and side lateral stacks.

The layout consists of a double depth range in the earlier section on the right, which has a central entrance flanked by two main rooms heated by axial stacks. A large kitchen is located at the rear right. The staircase, situated at the rear left, may have been added during the remodeling when the left-hand range was constructed in the mid to late 19th century. This left-hand range follows a two-room double depth plan, with a second entrance leading into a passage on the right and a principal room to the front left, heated by a side lateral stack, with another room beyond at the rear.

The exterior is two storeys high with a 2-3 window front. The symmetrical three-window front of the earlier section features a central timber and rendered porch with a flat roof and a 19th-century panelled door. There are two 19th-century 12-pane sash windows on the ground floor and three above, all with dressed slate segmental arches. To the left is the higher gabled end of the mid to late 19th-century extension, which has two storeys and an attic, with brick segmental arches over the openings. There is a part-glazed plank door to the right and a 19th-century six over nine-pane sash window. The first floor has two 19th-century 12-pane sashes and a single-light window in the attic.

Inside, the building retains much of its mid and late 19th-century joinery and carpentry details. Wilkey Down, previously known as Old Polapit Tamar, was once the residence of the Coode family before the construction of Polapit Tamar in 1866.
