Description

Trevu House is a large house from the early 19th century that has been subdivided into various dwellings. The building features uncoursed rubble, with the west facade rendered and the south side pebble-dashed. The roof is covered with slate on the front slopes and modern pantiles on the rear. The structure has a large U-shape, formed by a main range aligned north-south with long rear wings, all standing two storeys high.

The symmetrical north facade consists of three sections with three bays each, where the center section projects slightly forward. It has a high plinth and banded corner pilasters. The central three-bay section features a prominent entrance accessed by a flight of six steps, protected by a tetrastyle Doric porch. This porch has fluted granite columns and unfluted pilasters, along with a wooden entablature that includes triglyphs. The entrance door is panelled and glazed, with margin panes. On each floor, there are two 12-pane sash windows and a 16-pane sash window above the porch, all unhorned with exposed boxes, raised sills, and keystones. The facade is topped with a plain parapet, which has an urn at the right-hand corner.

Each of the three-bay side ranges features two large canted bay windows in the outer bays, with 12- and 16-pane sashes, and a 12-pane sash window in the center, along with three additional matching windows above. The south wing has a flat-roofed pilastered porch at the first bay, a two-storey canted bay in the center, a doorway in the fourth bay, and otherwise has 4-pane sash windows. The north (service) wing includes some 12-pane sash windows, while the rear of the building has been mostly altered. The interior was not inspected. Historically, Trevu House is said to have been built for the Pickford Smith family, who were manufacturers of explosives.
