Description

West Park Cottages consists of three attached houses built on the basement storey of a late 18th-century fortification. The houses were constructed in the mid-19th century on a late 18th-century basement and ground floor, with some later alterations. They are made of limestone rubble with brick dressings and bull nose moulding in metamorphic stone, while the right side is rendered. The roofs are slate.

The cottages are arranged in two blocks that step back to the left, each featuring a gable end front facing the road and a central half-gable front. They are 2½ storeys tall, with the ground floor displaying battered walls and bull nose moulding around each block. On the right side, the ground floor has paired doors and 2-light casements on either side, all with brick segmental heads, and all windows consist of 8 panes each light. The first floor features a paired central 2-light casement and one on each side, along with a 2-light casement in the gable end at attic level.

On the left side, there are two 2-light casements at ground floor, one to the left of a 20th-century addition, and two more at the first floor, plus a loading door at the upper level. The left side is single storey due to the slope of the ground and includes a corrugated iron porch and a 2-light casement.

The interior has not been inspected, but the stonework appears to be of a single build both above and below the bull nose moulding. This building is similar to Tower Cottage in Cremyll and Penlee Lodge in Cawsand Village, which also seem to have incorporated an 18th-century basement or ground floor.
