Description
The Redoubt is a fortification built in the late 18th century, constructed from sandstone and limestone rubble with limestone dressings. It features roofs of barrack rooms that were once slated and has a roughly square layout. The fort includes a gatehouse and barrack rooms along the east range and is surrounded by a moat, which previously had a bridge to the east.
The walls and basement level beneath the gatehouse and barrack rooms are battered, and there is a limestone bull nose moulding around the north, south, and west sides. The east side consists of a long single-storey gatehouse and barrack room block, resembling the structure at Grenville Battery. The central gatehouse has a segmental-headed gateway, with two remaining rubble piers that once supported the bridge. The barrack rooms on either side feature slanted musketry loops to cover the gate bridge, adorned with sandstone dressings, and have a stone bomb-proof roof. Some secondary windows have been added to the barrack rooms.
The moat bridge has been removed, making the interior inaccessible. The Redoubt was previously used for living accommodation and remains a notable example of a Napoleonic fort, contributing significantly to the landscape.
