Description
The lime kiln, dating from the 18th century, is located at SX 434 523 in Millbrook. It features a cottage attached to its side, likely built in the early 19th century, which is now in ruins. The kiln is constructed from slatestone, with some sandstone, and includes granite quoins and lintels for the fire door openings. It has a rectangular shape, measuring approximately 30 feet square and standing about 15 feet high, and is built into a bank with walls that have a slight batter. This single kiln has access arches with semicircular heads on both the east and west sides, with the eastern arch featuring a sandstone keystone. The kiln is open at the top and has an inverted cone shape, tapering inwards, and lacks a firebrick lining. The attached cottage has a one-room plan, with part of it made from sandstone; the lower room is cut into the bedrock, while the upper room includes a fireplace. The cottage is currently roofless.
