Description
The Mill is a tide mill dating back to 1598, with a significant rebuild in 1801 and later alterations. It is constructed from sandstone rubble with granite and sandstone quoins, topped with a corrugated iron roof. The eastern front presents the sluice arches, with the former mill pond now infilled to the rear. An addition, matching the original height, was made in the early 19th century to the right end, indicated by a straight joint. The building is two storeys high, including water channels below and a loft above. The front features two sluice arches with round heads; one is blocked, while the other has a flat granite lintel. At ground floor level, there is a door with a timber lintel, alongside a 20th-century window. Three 20th-century windows are located under the eaves. The 19th-century addition on the right incorporates a 20th-century window at first-floor level. The right gable end has a cart entry with a timber lintel and a six-pane window above, displaying a datestone with cable moulding. The left gable end has granite quoins and asbestos slate-hung cladding at both ground floor and loft levels, with a 20th-century window at each level. The rear of the building has three 20th-century windows at ground floor, the central one featuring a cambered and chamfered timber lintel internally; two similar windows are positioned under the eaves. Internally, the 1801 roof retains halved and crossed principal rafters, pegged, with two rows of purlins and upper collars. Ground floor features seven heavy chamfered cross beams, while at first floor there are eight morticed and chamfered cross beams present. The mill originally operated two wheels, each driving two pairs of stones; the only surviving piece of milling machinery is the sack hoist pulley located at ground floor. The mill occupies a prominent position on Millbrook Lake.
