Description

The ruins of a chapel, dating from the late 13th century, are located in Millbrook. Constructed from slatestone rubble with limestone dressings, the chapel is roofless and features gable ends. It consists of a nave and chancel combined into one structure and appears to have originally been two storeys, with the chapel situated on the first floor.

The east gable end displays an upper trefoil-headed window, though all tracery is missing, and a quatrefoil is positioned above it. The west gable end features a lancet window with a trefoil head at the upper level and a quatrefoil above. On the north side, there are two trefoil-headed lancets at the upper level, with a skewed pointed arched lancet between them. The walls slightly project to the right and left, suggesting a possible chamber, and remnants of a pitched slate roof are present. The south side has two trefoil-headed lancets, with a slatestone relieving arch at the upper level to the right, and a flat-headed window opening below it, also with a relieving arch. To the left, there are both a lower and an upper door opening; the upper one has an irregular rubble arched head, while a slate lintel spans the lower opening. It is likely that there was originally an external stair leading to the upper level.

Inside, there is a blocked east door featuring a timber lintel and relieving arch. The reveals to the lancets are splayed. At ground floor level, there is a blocked north window with a timber lintel and relieving arch, as well as a similar blocked opening on the west side. A 19th-century cart shed is attached to the east end of the chapel. The site is designated as an ancient monument, numbered 623.
