Description
This is a house located 70 metres to the west of Talastone, dating from around the mid-17th century, with probable extensions made in the 19th century. The building is constructed from rendered and painted stone rubble and cob, topped with a thatched roof that has a gable end on the left and a hipped end on the right. There is a rendered brick stack at the left end and an axial stack to the right of centre.
Originally, the house likely had a two-room and cross passage layout, heated by end stacks. It appears that in the 18th or 19th century, a third room was added to the right, which is heated by a fireplace in the earlier right-hand end stack. The exact date of this addition is unclear, as there is a straight joint visible on the front elevation between the two sections, but the floor joists in the extension are quite heavy, and some of the cross beams are stop-chamfered.
The exterior features two storeys and a regular two-window front. The earlier range on the left has 20th-century two-light casements in a blocked door opening, with a similar casement to the left and a door to the right. There are two two-light casements on the first floor. To the right, the later range has two 20th-century two-light casements on the ground floor.
Inside, there is a 20th-century fireplace heating the left-hand room and a Rayburn stove heating the right-hand room. The ceiling beams in the left room are fairly heavy and chamfered with simple run-out stops, while the ceiling beams in the right-hand room are roughly cut. The first floor was not inspected.
