Description
Forge Cottage is a house dating from the early to mid 17th century. It is built of rendered and painted stone rubble and cob, with a rag slate roof featuring gable ends. Stone rubble end stacks are visible on the left, and an axial stack is located to the right of the centre, with shafts rebuilt in the 20th century. A further 20th-century stack serves an extension on the right.
The original house formed the left-hand portion of a low four-room range. The ground slopes down to the right. Initially, it may have had a two-room plan with a cross or through passage, heated by end stacks. A third room on the lower right-hand side could be either original or added in the later 17th century. A fourth room was introduced in the mid to late 20th century.
The front of the house is asymmetrical, featuring a four-window arrangement, with late 19th and 20th-century casement windows. Two three-light casements flank a 20th-century door and open porch to the left of the centre, with a plank door to the far right. Four two-light casements are on the first floor.
The interior retains many original 17th-century features, including chamfered joists, with at least one displaying a straight cut stop; the others are likely hidden within the plaster. The fireplace on the left has an ovolo-moulded timber lintel with stepped and tongue stops, while the right-hand fireplace, heated by the axial stack, also has a chamfered timber lintel, the stops of which are obscured by the rebuilt jambs. Two circa 16th-century church bench ends have been repositioned near the stair. The roof structure is of circa 18th-century origin, with collars partly halved, lap-jointed, and pegged onto the face of the principals. The apices were not inspected.
