Description

Temperance Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into a private house. It dates from around the mid-17th century and was extended in the mid to late 20th century. The building is constructed from rendered and painted stone rubble and cob, topped with a thatched roof featuring hipped ends, and has brick axial stacks. Originally, the layout likely consisted of two rooms with a cross or through passage plan, heated by end stacks, with the hall-kitchen on the right and the parlour on the left. A service outshut was added across the rear, probably in the 18th or 19th century. In the mid to late 20th century, the stables and hayloft on the right were rebuilt to create an extra room, and the outshut extension on the left was also rebuilt to form additional rooms.

The exterior of the house is long and low, with the ground sloping down to the right. It has two storeys and an asymmetrical front with five windows. The entrance is located to the right of center and features a 20th-century porch with a thatched roof and partly glazed doors. This entrance is flanked by two replacement two-light casements and 20th-century glazed doors on the left. The first floor has five replacement casements of varying sizes, including three-light, two-light, and one-light windows.

Inside, the central 17th-century range retains its chamfered ceiling beams, although the lintel over the right-hand fireplace has been replaced. There is a cloam oven, and the smaller left-hand fireplace likely has a chamfered timber lintel. The roof structure consists of three A-frame trusses with halved, lap-jointed, and pegged apices and chamfered collars that are also halved, lap-jointed, and pegged. The house is said to have originally been an inn, later becoming a Temperance hotel with the rise of Methodism in the parish, and eventually a Temperance farm. It is now a private residence.
