Description
Haunch Bridge is an accommodation bridge built around 1823. It is constructed from stone rubble with a dressed stone arch. The bridge spans the Bude canal and the adjoining towpath, which has been partly ploughed over. The towpath, made of stone rubble, is nearly as wide as the narrow canal. The bridge features an elliptical arch made of dressed stone, with stone rubble parapets that are splayed over the abutments. There are few remaining parts of the Bude canal, which was in use from 1823 to 1891, and this bridge effectively demonstrates the width and character of the canal. Additionally, there are remains of two culverts located to the north and south of Haunch Bridge. For more details and history, refer to J. Rendell's book, "The Story of the Bude Canal," published in 1987.
