Description

Porch Cottages is a house with an adjoining cottage, dating from around 1800. It is constructed of killas and granite rubble with granite dressings on the ground floor, while the upper part is rendered, possibly over cob. The roofs are made of scantle slate, featuring brick chimneys at the gable ends and over the cross party wall. The building has cast-iron ogee gutters.

The layout consists of a double depth plan, with the house on the left being two rooms wide. The cottage on the right appears to be slightly later, featuring one room at the front and a one-room-plan bay set back on the right. The house has a wider room on the left, likely serving as a kitchen or living room, and a parlour on the right, with a cross passage in between that leads to the stairs and rear service rooms. The cottage also has a cross passage on its left.

The exterior is two-storeys high with an overall window arrangement of four to one. The house on the left has a nearly symmetrical two-window front with a doorway centrally located. It features an old panelled door. The cottage has a window above its doorway, along with additional windows on the right and in the set-back wing. All the windows are approximately late 19th or 20th century four-pane horned sashes. Both the house and the cottage have old open-fronted gabled porches, although the cottage has a 20th-century door blocking its former open front. The interior has not been inspected.
