Description
The lych gate and churchyard walls located to the west and south of the Church of St Erth are of historical significance. The churchyard walls were likely built in the early 19th century, while the lych gate was constructed in 1925 in memory of John Vivian of Meadowside, who died in 1925, and his wife Nanny, who died in 1919, as a gift from their three daughters.
The lych gate features roughly tooled low granite side walls with an open timber frame above. It has a dry Delabole slate roof, adorned with elaborate wooden barge boards on the front and rear gable ends. The structure has a rectangular plan with thin side walls that slightly return at the front and rear, forming plinths for wooden Gothic-style portals.
The exterior displays similar gable ends at both the front and rear, each featuring a wide four-centred arch with pierced spandrels and blind trefoil-headed panels on the jambs. The arch's head serves as a tie beam for a braced king post and strutted truss, leading to an open gable. The cusped and ogee-headed barge board adds decorative detail. The side walls are supported by three bays of open traceried lights, each containing three lights.
To the west of the lych gate, the churchyard wall is constructed of granite ashlar with granite coping, while the rest of the wall is made of granite rubble. At the southeast corner of the churchyard, there is a gateway featuring round-headed granite monolithic piers and a heavy wrought-iron gate.
