Description

This is a barn with a horse engine house, dating from the early 19th century. It features granite and killas rubble walls, with dressed granite quoins, jambstones, sills, lintels, and voussoirs. The roofs are grouted scantle slate with red clay ridge tiles. The building has an overall L-shaped plan, consisting of a large barn with a horse engine house positioned at right angles behind the right side, and a lower shippon with a store that is set back and adjoins the left side of the barn. There is a late 19th-century lean-to on the right side of the horse engine house.

The barn is two storeys high and has two south-facing fronts with three windows each. The shippon front, located on the left, is set back from the main barn front. The barn features four ground floor openings with round-headed arches, and the window openings at the far left and right have flat lintels beneath the arches, with the left opening later converted into a doorway. The doorway third from the left is wider and has a first-floor loading doorway just above the left jamb. There are ledged doors and two original shuttered two-light windows on the first floor to the left. The shippon front has a nearly symmetrical two-window section on the left with a central doorway, and a regular one-window front on the right with a doorway at the far right, giving it the appearance of a house with an adjoining cottage. The horse engine house has a large and small doorway at the ground floor rear.

The interior has not been inspected, but it is likely that the floors and roofs are original. This barn is considered to be a high-quality farm building at the principal farm of the Clowance estate.
