Description
War memorial, erected in 1920.
MATERIALS: constructed of Cornish granite, with black metal lettering.
DESCRIPTION: located on the village green to the south side of The Square in Praze-an-Beeble, the war memorial comprises a Celtic wheel cross with knotwork carving to the arms, a tapered rectangular shaft, and a three-stepped plinth. It stands on a square platform with edging stones and iron railings around its perimeter, and the whole is set within a recess, edged with kerbstones.
The north face of the plinth is inscribed IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF CROWAN,/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY,/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 TO 1918./ THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED IN DEEP GRATITUDE/ BY THE PEOPLE OF CROWAN. Beneath are inscribed the names of the 23 men of the parish who died in the First World War.
On the east face of the plinth is the inscription GREAT WAR/ 1939 – 1945 with the names of the 10 men of the parish who died during the Second World War.
