Description

This is an early 19th century house with a coachman's cottage, located on Fore Street, Praze-an-Bebble. The structure is built with coursed granite and killas rubble walls, featuring dressed granite quoins, sills, jambstones, and lintels. It has a scantle slate roof with projecting eaves at the front. Brick chimneys are situated over the gable ends, joining the neighbouring houses, and another brick chimney sits over the cross party wall separating the house and cottage.

The building follows a double-depth plan; a single-room-wide cottage sits to the left, with a wide carriage entrance on the right, while a two-room-wide house occupies the right side. The house likely originally contained a parlour on the left and a wider kitchen/living room on the right, with a cross passage in between, probably leading to a central stair between two rear service rooms. The cottage likely featured a parlour at the front and a kitchen/living room behind.

The facade is two stories high and has an overall four-window frontage for the cottage and a nearly symmetrical three-window frontage for the house. Both the cottage and house retain their original 16-pane hornless sash windows. The cottage windows are smaller in size. Pebble dash render over the ground floor window on the house likely conceals a wooden lintel. The carriage entrance, situated close to the window on the right, is spanned by a granite lintel and has two ledged doors, the left-hand door being wider. The house has a doorway slightly left of centre, with a window above. The original six-panel door features glazed top panels.

The interior has not been inspected. This property offers an interesting comparison to No. 5 Fore Street.
