Description

The Orangery is a building that has been converted into an office. It was constructed around the late 18th century, likely for the fifth baronet, John St Aubyn, who lived from 1758 to 1839. The building was re-roofed in the late 19th century. It is made of freestone ashlar in diminishing courses and features a steep dry Delabole slate hipped roof behind a parapet. The Orangery has a rectangular plan with a shallow outshut at the back.

In terms of architectural style, it is classical and is a single storey structure. The southeast front is symmetrical with five bays and a central doorway. Notable features include a plinth, rusticated quoins, flat arches with projecting keystones, and a platband cornice at the top of the parapet. The window openings are tall and wide, separated by narrow masonry piers. The windows are 24-pane hornless sashes, which are 20th-century replicas. There are also 20th-century glazed double doors that align with the upper sashes of the four windows.

Inside, the Orangery boasts a fine 19th-century chamfered king post roof. Although it was once neglected, it has been carefully repaired, providing a glimpse into the elegance of Clowance in the 18th century.
