Description

Pheasant Cottage is likely an estate account house, and it may have also served as the home of a gardener or gamekeeper for the Clowance estate. It dates from around the mid-19th century. The building is constructed from killas and granite rubble, featuring dressed granite quoins, jambstones, sills, and lintels. It has a slurried scantle slate roof with brick chimneys at the gable ends. The cottage has a small square plan, with the ground floor at basement level consisting of a kitchen/living room that was probably originally subdivided. The first floor has two tall windows on the north side, which likely served as one room and was used as an office. A single-storey 20th-century extension at the rear obscures the original doorway position. The cottage is two storeys tall, with the ground floor effectively functioning as a basement. The symmetrical north front features two windows, with two squat ground floor window openings fitted with 8-pane horizontal sliding sashes and two tall window openings above with 8-pane horned sashes. The interior has not been inspected. Pheasant Cottage is part of a group of buildings associated with Clowance Farm and the kitchen gardens of the Clowance estate, all set within mature wooded surroundings. The design of the house is unusual and clearly served a specific purpose related to the estate.
