Description

The Folly, located west of the kitchen garden, is a disused summer house dating from the early to mid-19th century. It features dressed coursed granite walls at the front and rear, with rubble on the sides, and has a lateral brick chimney on the right side wall. The building has a rectangular single-cell plan, with a heated room on the first floor above an unheated ground floor or basement store. Access to the ground floor is through the left side wall, while the first floor can be reached via a straight flight of external steps leading to a central doorway in the front (east) wall. There is a fireplace located midway on the right (north) wall.

The structure is two storeys high and is designed in a classical style. Dressed granite unmoulded pediments are positioned above both the front and rear. On either side of the front, there are screen walls with half-dome headed niches, each topped with brick arches. The six granite steps leading to the central first floor doorway are flanked by original ramped and scrolled wrought iron handrails supported on stanchions. At the rear, there is a squat central blocked window opening on the ground floor and a tall window opening above it on the first floor. Although it is currently roofless and floorless, the masonry of this garden building remains intact, making it an important feature within the Clowance estate.
