Description
The Summer House is a summer house dating from around the mid-18th century. It features rendered walls, granite steps, and an iron railing, with some reused granite elements from the 16th or 17th century. The building has a pyramidal scantle slate roof that sits above a moulded eaves cornice, and there is a brick chimney on the left side.
The structure has a square plan with a first-floor room above a ground floor or basement, which is now subdivided. It is two storeys high and has a symmetrical north front with two windows and a central reused moulded doorway from the 16th or early 17th century, which has an old door. The central first-floor doorway, now fitted with a 20th-century door, is accessed by a double flight of 18th-century steps, with the landing bridge creating a porch for the ground floor doorway. An original 18th-century iron balustrade with a ramped handrail is present. The two first-floor windows are original 12-pane hornless sashes featuring thick glazing bars.
On the right side of the building, there is a 16th or early 17th-century moulded two-light mullioned window with round-headed arched lights. Inside, the first floor boasts an original coved ceiling with an egg and dart pattern above a bead and reel cornice. There are 18th-century chimney pieces on either side, each adorned with the Harris crest, although one crest is obscured. The reused features, likely from Kenegie House, add to the significance of this building type, which is uncommon in Cornwall.
