Description
Kenegie Barton Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the 17th century or earlier, with remodels in the 18th century, evidenced by slates dated 1791 at the south gable end, and further changes in the 19th century. The building features partly painted granite rubble with granite dressings, and has scantle slate and concrete tile roofs with gable ends. The overall plan is irregular and L-shaped, making the original layout difficult to identify. The rear wing, which is at right angles to the main range, includes 17th-century moulded doorways and some incomplete mullioned windows. A round-arched doorway head has been resited at the front (north) of the main range. The left side of the main range was remodeled as a coach-house in the 19th century, and at the time of survey in 1986, there were remains of a robust 18th-century ceiling cornice inside. A clock and bellcote are located over the middle of the main range.
The exterior is two storeys high with an irregular six-window front facing north and a doorway positioned to the left of the middle. There is an outshut projection on the left and a cross wing on the right. Most of the windows are early 19th-century hornless shallow gable-ended sashes, with one 20th-century copy and one window missing at the time of the survey.
Inside, the farmhouse has mostly 19th-century or 20th-century carpentry and joinery. The roof structure over the main range features lap-dovetailed collars, which may be from the 18th century. There are two large fireplaces and evidence of a rear lateral fireplace to the left of the middle. This farmhouse may be built on the site of earlier buildings that were formerly arranged around a courtyard in front of Kenegie House.
