Description
The Newchurch War Memorial is a war memorial that was unveiled in 1920. It is located on a grassed strip of land to the north-east of the churchyard of the Church of All Saints, which is a Grade I listed building, and is surrounded by gravestones.
The memorial is made of Cornish granite and features a roughly hewn, tapering wheel cross set on a plinth with a rough surface around the edges and a smooth surface on the front and back. Inscriptions are displayed within recessed panels on both the front and rear faces of the plinth. At the bottom step of the memorial, there are two short stone bollards that serve as wreath holders.
The main face of the plinth has the inscription: "IN EVERLASTING MEMORY OF THE HEROIC MEN WHO IN THE GREAT WAR GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY FOR HUMANITY AND FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS," followed by the names of 21 individuals.
On the rear face of the cross shaft, there is an inscription that reads "1939-1945," and below this, the plinth features the inscription: "(13 NAMES) THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD, AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD; AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM, NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN; AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING, WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM."
