Description

This is an early 19th-century barn with shippons (animal shelters) and a horse-engine house, located adjacent to the farmhouse at Narr Lodge Farm. The barn is constructed of watershot sandstone rubble, with a stone slate roof. The north wall features a single bay on the left side, containing windows with long-and-short jambs, now blocked or partially blocked, and a doorway. The main part of the barn to the right has a continuous outshut, likely original, with openings also featuring long-and-short jambs. To the left of the wide entrance are two doorways and a window, the latter partially blocked; to the right are two additional windows, also partially blocked. A similar outshut is present on the south side. The interior of the main barn is characterised by hardwood tie-beam trusses. The eastern section of the building houses the horse engine and features a high ceiling with sawn softwood main joists and a cobbled floor. The horse engine is a vertical timber shaft of square section, with mortises for missing horizontal bars. A gear wheel with iron teeth is located at ceiling level.
