Penare Farmhouse With Attached Front Garden Wall And Outhouse

This is a circa mid-17th century farmhouse, with an addition from the later 17th century, and alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. Constructed of slatestone rubble, the farmhouse has a slate roof with crested ridge tiles and gable ends. A gable end stack is present on the right, with a rendered shaft, and a rear lateral stack is located to the left. A further stack is situated at the left side of the front wing, with a rubble shaft. The original plan comprised a two-room and cross passage layout, with the hall to the left, heated by a rear lateral stack, and the parlour to the right, heated by the gable end stack. A front wing, with a single-room plan, was later added in the 17th century, and heated from a stack on the left side. A 19th-century lean-to extends from the right end. The house forms a general L-shape, enclosed by an attached front garden wall constructed of stone rubble with a rendered coping and a wooden paling fence along the top. A small, single-story outhouse is attached to the right end of the house.

The exterior presents an asymmetrical two-window front. The main range has a 19th-century four-panelled door, protected by a 20th-century slate hood, on the left. To the right, a late 19th-century eight-pane sash window sits beneath a timber lintel. Above, two 19th-century twelve-pane sash windows are visible. The front wing is two stories high; its inner side features a 19th-century sixteen-pane sash and a 20th-century half-glazed door at ground level, alongside a 20th-century two-light, ten-pane casement above, on the right side. The front gable of the wing displays a sixteen-pane sash at ground level, and a twelve-pane sash at first floor. The outhouse has a monopitch slate roof, a 20th-century twelve-pane window, and a plank door. A rubble gateway is located between the house and the outhouse. A 20th-century lean-to is found at the right end of the house, with two doors and one casement window. The left end of the house features a large external stepped stack, with a sixteen-pane sash at ground level and a twelve-pane sash at first floor. The rear of the house has a 20th-century French window on the left, with a twelve-pane sash above. A further 20th-century twelve-pane sash illuminates the staircase. A 20th-century twelve-pane sash is situated at first floor to the right, along with an external stack. The interior was not inspected.
