Description
This is a row of three town houses with later shops, dating back to the 18th century, with a remodelling of the front in the 19th century. The front is stuccoed, topped by a steep roof covered in asbestos slate, and features brick end stacks. The houses have a double-depth plan, and present an overall five-window frontage.
Number 51 (on the right) has two early 19th-century sixteen-pane hornless sash windows above a mid-19th-century shop front. The shop front has small panes of glass, projected forward and featuring quadrant return lights, a moulded entablature, and a fascia. Number 53 has a similar, though slightly later, shop front with two panes per light, both with glazed doors and overlights. The house doorway to the right of Number 53 has a two-pane overlight and a 20th-century door. Number 55 features a large, early 20th-century three-light transomed oriel window with a two-light casement and single return lights, above a shop front of a similar date. The shop front includes a doorway on its left, and the original glazing has been replaced with single panes of plate glass. The interior was not inspected.
