Description

Churchgate Cottage is a cottage that was later used as village stores and has now been converted back into a cottage. It dates from the early 17th century and is constructed of stone rubble with large granite quoins, painted on the front elevation. The left gable end has been partly rebuilt. The roof is slate with gable ends, and there is an end stone rubble stack on the right, which became an axial stack when the school was added to the right gable end.

The plan likely consists of two rooms and a cross passage, with the larger hall kitchen on the right heated by the gable end stack. It is uncertain if the left room was heated. The exterior features two storeys with an asymmetrical two-window front. On the ground floor, there is a 19th-century two-light casement window to the left and an eight-pane shop window to the right, with a 20th-century glazed door near the centre. Above, there is a 19th-century one-light casement to the left and a two-light casement in a granite frame of a two-light mullion window to the right. The rear elevation likely has a blocked door opening to the right and two casements on the first floor, one in the granite frame of a two-light mullion window.

The interior is not accessible. The cottage is set in a picturesque location on the south side of the village green, with particularly unaltered and unspoilt front and rear elevations.
