Description
The Basset monument, located approximately 15 metres south-east of the tower of the former Church of St Illogan, is a monumental sarcophagus commemorating John Pendarves Basset, who died in 1739. It is made of grey marble and features white marble tablets. The monument has four moulded feet, steeply angled sides and ends, a bolection-moulded top, and a lid with rounded ends and a moulded rim. The upper surface is humped and topped with a ball finial. At the north end, there is a cartouche, and large lettered panels are attached to the sides. The north panel is inscribed with "JOHN PENDARVES BASSET, died six of Sept. MDCCXXXIX, aged xxv years," followed by a lengthy epitaph that continues on the south side. The south panel has a crack near the bottom edge, and the lettering on both panels is heavily weathered.
