Description

The Manningham Rectory, now a private dwelling, was built between 1780 and 1785, with significant remodelling around 1828. It is located on Churchtown Road, Illogan. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar on a granite basement, with a slate roof. It has an L-shaped layout, consisting of a main, rectangular block facing west and a service wing to the rear of the north end.

The main block originally comprised three storeys but was reduced to two over a basement when the service wing was added around 1828. The symmetrical west front features a sill band that extends around the building. A central, five-sided porch, with four steps leading up to a round-headed doorway featuring a keystone and double-glazed doors, provides access. The canted sides have fixed six-pane windows with aprons, and the principal floors have twelve-pane sashed windows. The hipped roof has projecting eaves and two chimneys on the front ridge, with a further two on the rear ridge. The basement level has nine-pane sashed windows, protected by low granite walls attached to the sides of the porch.

Attached at the right-hand end is a curved screen wall with two ramps. The side elevations have similar windows to the front. The service wing, which extends to the rear and steps forward slightly, is of two lower storeys and four bays, with sixteen- and twelve-pane sashed windows on the ground floor and six-pane windows above. The rear of the main block includes a round-headed stairwindow, while the rear of the service wing has been altered and rendered.

The interior features a fine, open-well curved stone staircase with stick balusters, and there is a large, full service basement.
