Description
The Marine Hotel with Shipwrights and Chain Locker is a public house that operates as three separate establishments, with a former warehouse converted into Shipwrights. The building likely dates from the 18th century in part, with other sections from the early to mid-19th century. It features pebble dash on stucco, with string courses and plain architraves, and has hipped roofs covered with dry Delabole slate at the rear and grouted scantle slate at the front of Shipwrights, along with some asbestos slate. There are also cast-iron ogee gutters at the rear of the Chain Locker.
The structure has a double-depth plan and consists of two storeys, three storeys in the centre, and two storeys again. Shipwrights has a three-window range with two-light casements that have three vertical panes per light, except for a central window that is blind. The Marine Hotel features a three-window range on the second floor with original 16-pane hornless sash windows above mid to late 19th-century canted bay windows. The Chain Locker has a four-window range with 20th-century four-pane casements and a late 19th-century canted bay window on the ground floor towards the right. The bay windows have hornless sashes with large panes and moulded cornices.
The rear elevation is three storeys on three levels, with Shipwrights on the right also being three storeys. The Chain Locker on the left has a tall two-window range with original 12-pane hornless sashes on the upper floors and a low single-window range with a late 19th-century horned sash above a two-storey canted bay of similar date. The Marine Hotel has a four-window range on the first floor with three original 12-pane hornless sashes, and features a lean-to projection over an opening, a fire escape doorway and steps, and a late 19th-century canted oriel window with horned sashes. The interior has not been inspected.
