Description
Double Lodge, gate piers, and screen walls are the entrance structures to Trelowarren House, dating from the early 19th century. The lodges are made of stucco over serpentine rubble and feature octagonal roofs behind parapets. The left lodge has the original scantle slate roof, while the right lodge is covered with asbestos slate. Brick chimneys rise from the walls opposite the entrance. The flanking walls and piers are constructed from granite ashlar.
Each lodge has an octagonal plan with one room; the left lodge serves as a living room with a larger fireplace, and the right lodge is a sleeping chamber. The lodges are positioned on either side of the gateway leading to the carriageway, with one principal pier still intact. Low quadrant-on-plan walls with terminal piers are located to the left and right.
These single-storey octagonal lodges have stone-coped parapets. The three outer faces of each lodge feature central round-headed blind or blocked openings, while the inner faces have doorways. At the back, similar openings with doorways are located near the gateway, and the left lodge retains an old two-light casement window next to the doorway. Between the two lodges, flanking the gateway, the remaining gate pier is made of rusticated granite ashlar with a moulded cornice and cap, square in plan, with smaller half piers attached to the lodges that are similar. The outer sides of the lodges are bordered by low square-coped screen walls that ramp at either end, each featuring square-on-plan terminal gate piers with square cap stones.
