Description
Rame Farm Halfway House is a farmhouse, likely a former account house, which includes front garden walls and gate piers. It probably dates from the early 19th century but is said to be from the 18th century. The building features painted rubble walls with granite dressings and a slurried scantle slate hipped roof with projecting eaves. Brick chimneys rise from the side walls. The original plan had axial partitions that are mostly removed, with a double depth layout that likely included a kitchen/living room on the left, a parlour on the right, and an entrance hall leading to a stair hall between two shallower service rooms. The first floor front chambers were originally one large room used for meetings.
The exterior is two storeys high, with first floor windows positioned just above the ground floor openings, creating a taller space above. The symmetrical southeast front has three windows and a central doorway, featuring a 20th-century door and original windows. There is a four-centred arched window above the doorway with Y-traceried two-light casement windows, while the other windows are 16-pane hornless sashes.
Inside, the building remains largely unaltered, retaining most of its original carpentry and joinery details, including a dog-leg staircase with stick balusters and chamfered newels, as well as four-panel doors. The rear right-hand room has granite flagstones, while similar flagstones in the entrance hall have been covered in concrete.
