Description
Edgcumbe Methodist Church, built in 1885, is a Wesleyan chapel featuring dressed rock-faced granite brought to course, with granite dressings. It has a dry Delabole slate hipped roof and a pedimented gable at the rear. The church has cast-iron gutters and a rectangular aisle-less plan with a basement schoolroom underneath. The entrance is through a two-storey porch on the right side, accessed by a wide ramp from the front courtyard.
The exterior is two storeys high, with the principal floor above the basement. The symmetrical front has a central bay that is slightly advanced, featuring a plinth, a moulded mid-floor string, an ashlar band, and moulded cornices on the pediments. The central bay includes a three-light Venetian window with coloured glass and marginal panes, while the basement has a similar single-light window. Other windows are 20th-century replacements in original segmentally-headed openings, which have moulded voussoirs and projecting keystones, along with moulded eaves cornices. The side walls have similar window openings, some still retaining original windows. The porch features a wide central arched doorway with original panelled doors and an open pedimented gable above.
Although the interior was not inspected, it may still have its original fittings. The front courtyard walls are made of rock-faced granite with dressed granite copings and piers. The central section of the wall is lower and topped with original cast-iron railings. There is a central gateway with square piers and ornate cast-iron gates, while the gate-piers and terminal piers have elaborate pyramidal caps. The side walls are constructed of rubble with dressed granite copings, and the ramp features original wrought-iron railings.
