Description
Wheal Kitty Engine House, also known as Sara's Shaft, is a disused pumping and winding beam engine house, along with associated structures including processing floors, dating from the mid to late 19th century. The building features walls made of slate killas, with brick arches over the main openings and timber lintels over the other openings. The chimney has a brick upper stage that is stepped back. The engine house has a rectangular plan and a round chimney that clasps the rear left-hand corner. Nearby are the associated dressing floors, which may be the most intact in Cornwall.
The exterior of the building is three storeys high, with unaltered and virtually complete elevations. The front wall has a central round-headed doorway, while the rear gable end features a large round-arched doorway and a large round-arched cylinder doorway, along with two round-arched window openings above. The right-hand wall has two round-headed windows at ground level and similar openings on each upper floor. The left-hand wall includes a round-headed doorway on the right and three small openings. The interior has not been inspected.
