Description

Karen's Kitchen and Gill's is a house with an integral stable on the left, now functioning as a restaurant and shop. It dates from around 1800, with the ground floor of the house on the right altered for a shop in the mid-19th century, along with later 20th-century modifications. The building is constructed of red sandstone ashlar with a slate roof, and the front area features Devonian limestone, which was formerly enclosed by railings.

Originally, the structure had a double depth plan with one front room on each side of a central entrance, and the stable on the left had a wide entrance. The ground floor was modified in the mid-19th century to create a double shop with central paired splayed entrances. The building stands three storeys high on a plinth and has four windows, all of which are 20th-century replacements featuring voussoirs.

On the left side, there is a 20th-century glazed front and door, with pintles remaining from the former stable entry. On the right, the paired 19th-century shop front includes a moulded fascia and two canted bays with a recessed triangular entrance, featuring a pair of half-glazed doors supported by acanthus consoles. The building also has V-jointed rusticated quoins and band courses.

Inside, there is a former doorway between the stable and the house at the rear right of the stable, and a 20th-century stair located at the rear right. The interior of the shop retains 19th-century fittings, including shelves and cupboards, while the rest of the interior has not been inspected.
