Description
36 and 37 The Gill are a pair of houses built in the early to mid 19th century. They feature a pebbledash exterior and a slate roof, rising three storeys above a cellar, with two window bays. The windows have plain reveals and projecting sills, with segmental heads on the ground and first floors, while the second-floor windows, located just under the eaves, are shorter. No. 37, on the right, has sashed windows without glazing bars in the lower panes, while the other windows are casements. Below the ground-floor windows are openings leading to the cellar. The central doorways are paired and share a timber doorcase supported by two fluted Greek Doric engaged columns, although one column is now missing. This is set on rough stone bases, with a plain frieze and timber cornice. In front of the doorways is a pebble forecourt, which features an inscription in front of the left-hand doorway reading 'J.R. 1825', possibly indicating the date of construction. The right-hand side of the forecourt has been restored and is marked with the date '1987'. The gable chimneys are topped with caps made of rock-faced limestone.
