Description

Stockbridge House is a house dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is pebbledashed with painted stone dressings and has a slate roof. The symmetrical front facade features three bays and two storeys plus an attic. It has a stone plinth, a sill band to the first floor, a cornice below the shallow attic windows, and a plain stone gutter. The tripartite windows have glazing bar sashes on the lower floors and casements in the attic, all with narrow rendered surrounds. Ground-floor windows have segmental arches rising above a timber cornice that forms part of the window frame. A Tuscan porch of painted stone, raised on two steps, shelters double-glazed doors with margin panes and an overlight. Chimneys of yellow brick flank the gables, which have bracketed verges. A rear wing features a limestone ashlar chimney cap.

Inside, a dogleg open-string staircase has stick balusters and a wreathed mahogany handrail. The windows have panelled shutters and the doors are raised and fielded panelled. The left-hand front room contains a white marble fireplace surround with a round-topped grate, while the right-hand room has a fireplace with a polished limestone surround and a grate with folding cast-iron shutters.
