Description

Hillcrest is a cottage dating from around the early 18th century. It is constructed of painted and rendered stone rubble with a scantle slate roof, featuring several early crested ridge tiles. The cottage has gable ends. A large stone chimney stack is located in the lower gable end, and there is a truncated projecting chimney stack at the higher end of the front elevation. The original plan likely comprised two rooms and a through passage; the lower left-hand room was heated by a fireplace in the large end stack, and the higher right-hand room had a front (originally rear) lateral stack. A 20th-century staircase has been inserted into the passage. The cottage is two storeys high with an asymmetrical elevation facing Mill Hill. The ground floor has a 20th-century part-glazed door beneath a slate lean-to canopy, and a 20th-century window above. A projecting lateral chimney stack is located to the right. The rear elevation was probably once the front elevation and has a symmetrical two-window arrangement; the ground floor openings have been enlarged. The interior includes a 20th-century staircase in the through passage; the fireplace in the lateral stack has been blocked, and a 20th-century chimney piece exists in the gable end fireplace. The first floor was not inspected.
