Description

Maker and Rame Vicarage is a house, built in the early 19th century with later 19th and 20th century alterations. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with brick dressings, featuring a hipped slate roof with crestings along the ridge and rendered stacks to the front and rear of the sides. The right side of the house is rendered.

The house is arranged on a double depth plan, with a central entrance and a lateral passage extending to the left, incorporating a staircase. The two main rooms are located to the rear, overlooking the garden, while the kitchen is situated at the front right and a small parlour/study is at the front left, with a staircase to the rear of the parlour.

The front elevation has two storeys and three windows, all 12-pane sashes within recessed bays with segmental heads. A central three-panelled door with an overlight and cornice on consoles sits within a moulded architrave. A 20th-century garage is attached to the left side, along with a 4-pane sash and two 2-light casements at the first floor. A porch and an 8-pane sash are present at ground floor on the right side. The rear elevation includes a ground floor verandah balcony, rebuilt in the 20th century, supported by brick piers. French windows with margin glazing and glazed hoods are situated at the rear ground floor; two 16-pane sashes and a central 4-pane sash are at the first floor. A central basement door provides access.

Inside, the entrance hall features a cornice with modillions and floral mouldings, along with double inner doors with Gothic glazing. A dog-leg staircase with a wreathed handrail, ramped design, stick balusters, and scrolled string is located at the left end of the lateral passage. The two principal rear rooms are linked by side panelled double doors with segmental heads. One room has a black marble fireplace, the other a white marble fireplace. The French windows are framed by boxed heads with pediments and acroterial ornaments. Both rooms have elaborate plaster cornices with tiered mouldings including acanthus. All ground floor doors are six-panelled. A small room is located to the front right, and a kitchen is to the front left. The house is believed to have been built by a doctor. The plasterwork is stylistically similar to that found at Higher Anderton House, Millbrook.
