Description
A Methodist church, dating from 1866, stands on the south side of Vogue Beloth, near Illogan. The church is built of roughly-shaped killas stone, laid in regular courses, with granite dressings and a slate roof. It is rectangular, set on a north-south axis, and has a symmetrical, two-bay gabled front facing the road. The main entrance features a large round-headed doorway with quoined jambs, stepped stone arches, a raised keystone, double doors with round panels, and a fanlight with radiating glazing bars. Tall, round-headed sash windows that mirror the doorway’s design flank the entrance. The gable above a hollow-moulded cornice contains a recessed panel with concave corners and raised lettering which reads “WESLEYAN CHAPEL 1866”. The side walls, three bays in length, have twelve-pane sash windows on both floors. A lower-level extension projects from the rear. The interior is believed to contain a horseshoe-shaped gallery with panelled fronts, and a rear choir gallery. The forecourt is enclosed by granite piers, with a semicircular wrought-iron lamp support between the central pair; spear-headed gates and railings with dog bars complete the enclosure. A pebble-paved path, featuring a wheel pattern and lettering, leads from the gate to the main entrance.
