Description

The lower gate piers to the south of Newton Ferrers and the adjoining garden walls date from the late 17th century. These entrance gate piers are made of granite ashlar and are square in section. They feature tall plinths with moulded bases and cornices, and the sides of the plinths have incised decorations of a circle within a lozenge. The piers have chamfered rusticated shafts topped with a moulded entablature and a curved neck that ends in a ball finial. Below the entablature are heraldic arms: the right-hand pier displays the de Ferrers arms, which consists of a chevron between three escallops, while the left-hand pier possibly features the Coryton arms, described as argent a saltire sable. The garden is flanked by a stone rubble wall that ramps at the junction with the piers.
