Description
Lower Metherin Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century or earlier. It is constructed of stone rubble with granite quoins and has a rag slate roof, featuring a gable end on the right and another gable end on the front wing to the left. There is a projecting stone rubble and granite end stack on the right with moulded granite strings and a rendered shaft, as well as a projecting stone rubble end stack on the front left with a brick shaft.
The original plan of the farmhouse is uncertain, but the ground slopes down to the right (southeast). The main range consists of a two-room layout, possibly with a through passage, with the lower room on the right heated by the end stack. It is unclear if the left-hand room is heated. There is a one-room wing on the front left, also heated by an end stack. A staircase is located in the projection at the inner angle between the left-hand wing and the main range.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a regular window arrangement of 1:2, with the front wing on the left and the ground sloping down to the right. The left-hand wing features two-light casements on both the ground and first floors, while the stair projection in the angle is lit by a small 20th-century window. A 20th-century glazed porch with a four-pane sash is situated to the right, alongside two two-light casements on the first floor. The interior is not accessible, but an inspection may reveal interesting features that could help in understanding the development of the plan.
