Description
Durfold is a house that dates back to the early 17th century or possibly earlier. It was gutted by fire in the 1960s and partly rebuilt in the 1970s and 1980s. The structure is made of stone rubble and has a slate roof with gable ends. There is a rebuilt projecting stone rubble end stack on the left, a front lateral hall stack with a moulded granite cap, and a projecting stone rubble end stack on the right, also with a moulded granite cap.
The house is built along a slope, with the ground rising to the right. The original layout likely consisted of three rooms and a through passage, with a service room on the left, a hall or kitchen heated by the front lateral stack, and an inner room to the right heated by the end stack. There is a stair projection at the rear of the higher side of the hall, providing access to a chamber above the inner room. It is possible that the hall was originally open to the roof, featuring a two-storey inner room and a lower end. A two-storey porch from the 17th century is located at the front of the through passage, and a 19th-century outshot has been added to the rear of the lower end and passage, possibly replacing an earlier wing that may have contained a stair to a room above the lower end.
The exterior of the house features two storeys and has an asymmetrical five-window front with the ground rising to the right. There is a two-storey porch to the left of centre, with a front lateral stack to the right and a largely rebuilt hall bay adjoining it. A 19th-century porch is located to the right. The two-storey porch has a round-headed chamfered arch with ball and pyramidal stops, and a 20th-century two-light casement window on both the ground and first floors. The rebuilt hall bay projection also features a 20th-century two-light casement, with a 19th-century gabled porch to the right. There is a semi-circular stair projection at the rear of the higher end on the left side, along with a lean-to outshot at the rear of the lower end, the passage, and the lower end of the hall. The interior was not accessible at the time of the survey in 1986.
