Description
West Penstroda is a house with garden walls at the front, dating from the early 17th century, possibly with earlier origins. It is constructed of granite ashlar and stone rubble, featuring large granite quoins. The slate roof has gable ends, and the right-hand gable end has moulded granite parapet coping along with a moulded granite stack from the 17th century. The left-hand gable end has a projecting stone rubble end stack with a brick shaft.
The original layout of the house is uncertain, and it may have been larger in the past. The ground slopes down to the left. The house has a two-room and through passage plan with an entrance porch near the center. Although the interior was not accessible during the survey in 1986, the owner mentioned a possibly 17th-century panelled screen on the right-hand side of the passage and panelling that may have been reused around the stair, likely added on the left side of the passage. A rear outshot containing a dairy and back kitchen was added in the 18th century.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front that may have two or three windows; the left side is obscured by dense foliage. There is a single-storey granite porch from the 17th century with a slate roof and a chamfered segmental arch, possibly featuring diagonal stops. To the right of the porch is probably a three-light mullion window with a hood mould, and above it is a 16-pane sash window. The left side of the house is not fully visible. The front garden wall is made of granite rubble with chamfered granite coping, ramped on the left side. An interior inspection is likely to reveal several interesting features in this particularly unaltered and fine house, which was probably built for a family of at least Yeoman status.
